Small town. Unrequited love. Unhinged father. Runaway sister, presumed dead. Basketball. Best friend. Best friend’s car. Best friend’s girlfriend. Racism. Custodian.

Life makes no sense. God makes no sense. Paxton has no one to explain either. His sister, Amethyst, ran away when he was nine, leaving a note promising to find him when he goes to college and swearing him to secrecy. He is failing spectacularly at becoming a basketball star and succeeding, narrowly, at surviving his emotionally fractured parents. He needs to escape his minefield home life as well as the claustrophobia and gossip of a town that knows his business better than he does—without knowing him at all. He's applying to Princeton and UCLA but can't afford junior college. After four years, he's now setting the stage for potentially his greatest humiliation asking out Guinevere—brilliant, musical prodigy, gorgeous, long-time friend.

Jeff, the one person who has encouraged Paxton with Guinevere, begins pursuing Emily from the Reservation. Paxton's not racist—no, really—it's just that Emily is psycho, even by his family's standards. But Emily also knows something about Amethyst...maybe.

Is escape possible? What happens if a hopeless cause isn’t? Can a screwed-up guy handle success without sabotaging it?
Or are lofty goals just a means of splattering from greater heights?

If Nick Hornby grew up in the Midwest and co-wrote with John Hughes, this is probably what you'd get. Solid story arch with a well developed cadre of friends and enemies, driving a love story that's all-snap and no-sap.

It's hard to feel bad for Paxton because you've spent all your energy feeling hope for him. It's a good thing, trust me. There's plenty of upheaval and tension here without ever plunging in to gloom. Loved all the 80s nostalgia. And there's mystery too! "Something Like Faith" does a little genre-bending without trying too hard. In fact, the whole thing is dripping with sincerity without getting preachy or needy.

So throw on some Tears for Fears, crack open a case of Stroh's, and get to reading!

Something Like Faith eBook Mike RumleyWells Reviews

I really enjoyed this book! It had been awhile since I'd been able to find a good novel - one that I looked forward to reading at night, and then couldn't put down. This one hooked me like that. I appreciated the authentic and mysterious characters along with the classic underdog story.
Only "gripes" - 1) I think I noticed a couple of "you're"s instead of "your"s.... and 2) I want to read the sequel! What happens to these "new friends"?! I hope "your" already working on that, Mr Rumley-Wells! ;-) Thank you for a fun read!
It's hard to believe this is the author's first novel--I was drawn in from the first chapter and read the entire book in under 24 hours (and it's not short!). I loved the voice of Paxton, the main character. He's a kid who should be really bitter because he has been beaten down by some of the most important voices in his life. But he just keeps being a good guy and choosing something better! It's definitely a coming of age story with themes of facing the often less-than-rosy realities involved with getting what we've always dreamed. But it's also authentic and funny--and it has a non-mushy love story. If you're looking for an engaging novel that will make you think/laugh/HOPE, this is definitely one to pick up.
Good story, well developed characters, interesting, unique style, this book is really good. The protagonist, Paxton, and his narrative voice grabbed and held me immediately. My initial impression upon finishing the book was that it felt like a fusion of The Outsiders and Catcher in the Rye. It's loaded with themes similar to those books, but also with the sort of self examination you find in Nick Hornby's work.

The nice thing is that it recalls all of those influences, but it isn't any of them. It's the voice of Mike Rumley-Wells and that voice has penned a fantastic story of it's own. I especially enjoyed the way he treats the themes of perspective and expectation, illustrating how they affect nearly everything in these characters' lives and deftly showing the damage of judgement based on perception. This includes, refreshingly, faith in God, a theme which weaves unobtrusively through the book but is never overbearing or preachy. It's integrated carefully, like all of the other themes and subject to the same forces. And while the book offers some very dark realism, there are powerful threads of hope and redemption at the heart of the whole narrative. I really think publishers missed out on this one. Read it now so you can say you were a fan before it went big!
OK. Disclosure. I know the author. That is why I read the book. I read the book on my wife's . My wife is the one who likes to read. I have never been a reader. I am terribly slow. But this book was written by a friend. So, you know, I had to read it. I don't have any way to compare and contrast. But this is how I felt as I read it -- a constant tinge of anxiety and tension and hopefulness about where the story would lead, while simultaneously feeling this weird sense of sadness knowing that the story would come to an end. I just finished reading it about 15 minutes ago, and adrenaline is still pumping through my heart. If this is how it feels to read a good book, then I understand why there are people in the world who enjoy doing this sort of thing on a regular basis!
This romance captures the realities of young adulthood. The pressures and awkward struggles faced by rich and poor, healthy families and broken homes, have much in common. The story line brings questions of equity and fairness, respect and loyalty, and the human search for truth and perspective into life. Reflective and compelling thoughts draw the readers into the heart of a young man's walk into answered prayers. I would recommend the book to anyone who has young adults in their lives.
Coming from a small town, growing up and into adulthood where everyone knew everyone and everyone's business, it could be difficult to find your way and know where life would take you if you could even get out of that small town and the community who knows you so well, or perhaps they've just identified you as you are seen by the eyes of others. Faith was an elusive concept we would here from parents, preachers and church elders, but was not something we teens relied upon. We relied on advice from friends and adults we trusted. But ultimately it was faith, or at the time "something like faith," that helped us find our ways and achieve our dreams.

In a narrative story with identifiable characters and a very likeable protagonist in Paxton, Mike Rumley-Wells takes us through the doubts, fears, and tribulations identifiable to many of us growing through those troublesome teen years with a storyline familiar to most all of us, from rural to urban upbringings. At times perhaps a bit slow in its progress, the story moves along to an end that will leave the reader smiling and saying as I did, "Yeah, I remember now. I made it, and Paxton did too."

Hopes and dreams are as shared among us as the air we breathe. Faith, or something like it, is the same way. Choose to have faith and your dreams too will come true. Great book and very highly recommended.
